Below is a very simple exercise that will enable you to experience a hypnotic change in the privacy of your home. Reading and/or practicing the steps below will help you familiarize yourself with the process that occurs in session. (Please note, this exercise is not intended to resolve any personal concerns you might have, but only to introduce you to the hypnotic process.)

If you choose to try this, it is best to read the instructions fully, then set a timer for five minutes (in case you fall asleep and need an alarm!), and practice the techniques listed.

Know that, at any time, should you feel uncomfortable, you can stop the process, open your eyes, come back into the room and re-orient yourself to the present. If need be, simply looking at a clock can help you re-engage with the world should you feel "off".

If you try the process and find it hard to do, don't despair. Many people find it easier when there is someone else to help guide them through the process. If you want to pursue this further, contact your local hypnotherapist.

Okay - ready to begin?

1. Close your eyes and begin concentrating on your breathing. Allow yourself to breathe deeply into your abdominal area, exhaling twice as long as it took you to inhale.

2. When you feel relaxed, allow yourself to remember one specific time or incident when you felt extremely proud of yourself, happy to be alive, or loved (decide ahead of time what situation you want to remember). Be there fully in your mind. Hear the sounds, see things through your own eyes, and feel the feelings you had  that let you know you felt proud, happy, or loved. Allow those feelings to wash over you - immerse yourself in them fully.

(If at any time, negative thoughts or feelings intrude, erase them  - visualize a blank screen, whisk them away on your breath, or make a static sound in your mind - and start over until you experience only the positive feelings.)

3. When you feel the positive feelings completely, gradually bring yourself back into the room, taking the feelings of pride, happiness, or love with you.

4. Re-center yourself to the present by looking at a clock in your room, while maintaining those positive feelings.

How did that go?

Do you feel more relaxed? Uplifted? If you were able to follow the instructions above, the answer is likely "yes". If that is the case, you just experienced the power of hypnosis. You can practice this any time you like, to re-experience these, or other, desired feelings.

This is a taste of what can happen in your hypnotist's offfice.

(Remember, if you had a hard time "getting into it", there is nothing wrong with you or the process. It might simply mean that you need the guidance of another person to facilitate the process. There are many people for whom that is the case. Contact your local hypnotherapist to experience the power of hypnosis.)

Happy daydreaming!
